St Moritz

St Moritz has been an important spa town since the Middle Ages and has been welcoming winter visitors since 1864. This is one of those places which sums up the word jet-set, having featured in Bond films and in classic songs like 'Where do you go to my lovely' in the 1960s...and it's still the place to ski and be seen. Its lakeside setting may be beautiful but the resort could never be called pretty. Like many Swiss resorts, it comes in two parts - in this case Dorf and Bad, 3km apart. Dorf, on the lakeshore, has most of the opulent hotels, restaurants, shops and clubs. Sleepy St Moritz Bad only woke up a few years ago with the opening of the giant Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski.
