Bangalore

Once called Bengaluru ('the town of boiled beans'), Bangalore is today better known as The Silicon Valley of the East. The city at the forefront of India's high-tech industry boom is currently ranked as the country's most liberal, forward-thinking and developed metropolis and one of the world's fastest-growing urban areas. But this doesn't detract from the fact that Bangalore is also India's 'Garden City'. Indeed nowadays it is almost as well known for its gardens as for its super-efficient taxi system.

Conde Nast Traveller's review of the Leela Palace as the 'World's Favourite Overseas Business Hotel' defies all explanation. How does this rollickingly marvellous palace of a property count as a 'business hotel'? The 3500 square foot Maharaja Suite, offering views over sumptuous gardens and misty waterfalls, is sensational, whilst the 5th floor Royal Club, a hotel within a hotel, comes with an exclusive gastro restaurant, a bar boasting rare labels, and a Cigar Room with a much prized collection of exquisite wines, rare brandies, vintage rums and fine aged malts. There is also the Champagne Lounge and, all in all, this is the finest and most luxurious place to stay in Bangalore - atmospheric as well as stylish, and it's where Bill Clinton stays when he's in town. A close second best, The Oberoi is fabulously located on MG Road, in the heart of the bustling business and shopping districts, and yet sits serenely amidst an abundance of lavish greenery. Expect the Oberoi's hallmark understated luxury and slick service together with serene rooms overlooking landscaped gardens, perhaps the hotel's greatest attraction. Breakfast in the charming Terrace room opening onto waterways and greenery is something to wake up for. Alternatively, for those wanting something young and hip, The Park Hotel is a hub of style thanks to its swanky Terence Conran design. Ask for rooms 401-404 and don't miss Spinn, a bright white cocktail bar full of activity.
