Bermuda

Bermuda is known for its British traditions - from afternoon tea to cricket - and while we Brits may not be as charmed as other tourists, even we have to admit it's nice to know that some of the old traditions are alive and well somewhere in the world. Of course, there's plenty more to recommend this island about 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina (and thus less than two hours by plane from New York). Pink sand beaches, for instance, not to mention beautiful pastel homes, blooming bougainvillea and frangipani and manicured golf courses, some of a very high standard. And you have to love the fact that businessmen still wear blazers but are not afraid to show a little leg with their Bermuda shorts in bright colours like green and yellow. If you have yet to discover this sun-baked patch in the middle of the Atlantic, now is the time - next year the island celebrates its 400th anniversary.
