The third most visited place in France (after Paris and Mont St Michel), Carcassone, in the Languedoc region, is steeped in fascinating Cathar history. With its unforgettable medieval skyline and fairytale castle that inspired Walt Disney, it’s no wonder that it’s so popular with visitors. The city is divided in two; there’s the ‘old’ Cité, a medieval-fortress town that houses the legendary castle, and Bastide Saint Louis across the River Aude which was originally built as a separate town in the 14th century.
