Touted as 'a sunny place for shady people', the Principality of Monaco is a European gambler's playground. Home to royalty, racing drivers, supermodels and tax exiles, the beaches are pay-to-pose and in the harbour you'll see some of the world's most extravagant boats. This independent, sovereign state is run by one of the world’s oldest ruling families, the Grimaldis. Monégasques famously do not pay taxes, and almost all the principality's revenue comes from tourism and gambling. Flanked on three sides by France, backed by the Alps and lapped by the Med, its fame is out of proportion to its size.
