As befitting a city with a deeper, more colourful history than any other in the nation, the benevolent belle of the American South has donned a new pair of party shoes and is dancing again to her beloved Dixieland jazz. Recovery in New Orleans has been slow but steady since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in late August 2005. The people who stayed or who returned to rebuild – many of them artists, musicians, actors, and chefs – are dedicated to giving the rest of us good reason to resume our love affair with their steel magnolia of a home. You can look far and wide but nowhere else will you find such a jewel box of wonders, from the ships slipping between the banks of the mighty Mississippi to the non-stop celebration of food, music, antiques and lust for life in the French Quarter and the graceful heritage of an age long past in the Garden District. The Crescent City will intrigue you the moment you meet her, and no matter how often you visit something about her enigmatic soul draws you back time and again. New Orleans is one of the best places on the planet for music, nightlife and food.
