Padua

Padua is an undiscovered gem, often overlooked in favour of the more obvious Italian gems like Venice and Rome. Don't be put off by the somewhat dreary suburbs, the old town is wonderful - and much less touristy than many of Italy's more famous cities. With its narrow cobbled side streets and wide piazzas, this is a small and beautiful town whose architecture and history will transport you back to Renaissance times. You'll find one of the best food markets in Italy, bursting with fruit, vegetables, cheeses & salamis. Coupled with the fabulous Giotto frescoes at the Scrovegni Chapel, Padua has plenty to fill a long weekend or act as a mini side-trip from Venice.
