Sydney

You've got to love a city where residents are called Sydneysiders; where you can travel everywhere by ferry or hop on a seaplane and jet off to a top restaurant for lunch. Rather like a Labrador puppy, Sydney is all tail-wagging enthusiasm and in-your-face charm, bursting with that appealing Australian sunny-side-up insouciance which some mistake for arrogance. Culture lovers might favour its snootier, more restrained, sister Melbourne, but Sydney has its fair share of award-winning art and design and plenty of iconic architecture besides the obvious bridge and opera house. Part of Sydney's charm is that it encapsulates the best of the rest of the world - the flamboyance of Rio, the beaches of California, the shopping of Manhattan and the cuisine of Asia - while maintaining its own unique identity. Add to the mix Sydney's world-class hotels and restaurants, fascinating museums and art galleries and the sheer splendour of its setting, and you have an unbeatable combination. In Sydney, the sun really does seem to shine more brightly. As the residents will tell you time and again, it's simply the best city in the world. You'll get tired of hearing it, but as you leave you may well be starting to agree.
