As people look for fail-safe information about travel plans, the role of the internet is set to grow over the next decade. Sites such as Globalista.co.uk ... provide carefully edited and curated destination information to private clients and subscribers, and go some way to filling the void left by travel agents and impersonal web offerings.

Old fashioned it might be but sometimes in this corporate, modern world, a little personal quirkiness is just what you want. If that's the case and you're into luxury travel, Arsycarmel.com is a godsend. Packed with unbiased but flagrantly opinionated hotel, restaurant, bar, airline and resort reviews by the site's owner, who travels anonymously and pays its own way, it covers destinations in almost 30 countries. Like that? Try Globalista.co.uk

Choosing the 'right' hotel or restaurant in an unfamiliar place is always a bit of a  gamble. A new travel website launches this month called Globalista (www.globalista.co.uk). Created by John Gordon (founder of Intelligence Squared) and travel specialist Olivia Koerfer, Globalista aims to cut through the profusion of information now available. Membership gives access to reports on a rapidly growing list of destinations (100+ currently and up to 300 by the year end) compiled by specialists and backed up by summaries from the best guidebooks, magazines or newspapers. Useful extras include recommended reading with 'one-click' links to Amazon as well as a live travel consultancy. As Gordon tells us: "There is simply too much information out there and Globalista's target audience is looking for synthesis. We aim to become the 'trusted friend' we all like to turn to when deciding where to stay, eat and what to do."

Luxury travel - but in a recession?
The Times
Thursday 29 January 2009

A new site that’s been going less than two weeks has bravely launched into the luxury travel sector, or rather luxury travel information sector. Globalista.co.uk certainly looks good and has some quality content provided by travel journalists who have lived or still live in their chosen destination, but will users pay the £150 per year to read these gems?

There are 100 subscribers so far, but the site will need many more to flourish… The review round-ups and direct links to hotel and attraction sites is a boon, and the content is broad – the key is how often it will be updated – with so many blogs snapping on the heels of paid-for travel content, they’ll need to keep on their toes to justify the subscription fee.
