, Beijing, next door to the Summer Palace, gets our top vote for its brilliant location. Rooms are refreshingly tranquil and treatments at the sublime spa are a heady mix of Indian, Thai as well as Chinese influences. is the most sumptuous address in town - although we hear that service leaves something to be desired. It’s right in the centre, next to Tiananmen Square, and after a £6 million restoration the whole place is sparkling with old-world glamour. Rooms are all silk, velvet and four-poster beds and afternoon tea is an institution. Just a few blocks away, is The Peninsula Palace(

; some say it's a classic, others that it's more than a little run down. Impeccable service, a beautiful spa, and English-speaking staff. Finally, the much-anticipated The Opposite House(

, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma is pared down minimalist, very white with beautiful understated wood. Great bar, funky art on the walls and we hear, a brilliant ozone pool.

has 90 wood-panelled rooms and private banquet rooms right in the centre of town in a traditional courtyard setting.

; some of the third-floor rooms have balconies that look onto private courtyards, leafy trees and busy alleys. It’s pretty and sweet but don’t expect all-out luxury.
